Like in all former colonies the people and the land on Dominica were heavily exploited by the colonists. However there was an englishman Heskeith Bell who realized the misery of the natives and supported a place where they could cultivate their centuries-old culture. This is how The Carib Territory was founded 1903 and got 1952 it´s own local government which provides with a Carib Chief a representative in the Government of Dominica. The whole land in the Carib Territiory belongs to all Caribs but unfortunately their native culture is in the retreat due to the growing amount of the tourists and multimedia, so that you can only recognize by the sign “ The Carib Territory”,
the indian features of people and the ununderstandable language called “patois” that you entered it already. There are plenty of things which can be told about the traditions of the Caribs. If you are interested in them please contact the Carib Council Office. One part of the native culture you will find in every house in a Carib Territory -arts and crafts. If you want to bring a typical souvenir from Dominica this is the right place to look for one. The prises are low and the pieces are truly handemade. Nevertheless you shouldn´t buy at the first craft shop but visit several shops and compare the prises and the quality
