A little hint for those who want to go on the island tour (which is recommended). You will vainly look for a road between Petite Savanne
and Delices on all available roadmaps,
however since 1999 it does exist, so you can drive around the whole island. Actually it doesn`t mean that you drive along the coast all the way, the road bends from time to time inland and then
returns to the coast. The new part of it is a passroad of
the kind we rarely found even in the Alps.
From Delices you can make an excursion to the Victoria Falls. These two cascades are different to the others because they have a black basalt as a subsoil.
This tour will reward you with beautifull nature, bizzar views to the Atlantic coast with it`s weird vegetation and a variety of fruits waiting to be eaten by you. On our way from Rosalie to Pont Casse
` we passed a grapefruit plantation, the owner had no use for it, so we
picked 50 pink grapefruits which was enough for the rest of our vacation.
We would recommend that you make the island tour in two parts, (if you have enough time), north and then south.
The best roadmap is the Worldmap No 11 Dominica, issued by Ordonance Survey Worldmaps (ISBN 1-895907-80-2) and is available in every
geographical bookshop. All roads and 4WD-trails on this map are really passable, so don`t lose heart!!
After all this is not your car !
